Cleaning our Spiritual Windshield

This past Sunday we looked at the Model Prayer from Matthew 6:9-13. One of the elements of this prayer is confession. We pray, “forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.” This is confession. Humble confession of our sins is needed for an ongoing relationship with Christ. 1 John 1:9 is a promise from scripture that says, “If you confess your sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Confession leads to cleansing.
Let me use an illustration to explain confession. My little girl Joy greatly dislikes rain, snow or sleet, if it appears on the windshield of the car. When water, snow, and ice are on the windshield, they obstruct her view of seeing the outside world. It bothers her to the point that she will take matters into her own hands. She will reach across to the windshield wipers and put them on the highest setting, just to quickly remove the obstruction from her view.
Spiritually speaking, sin obstructs our windshield to God. Sin also obstructs our view of the world around us. It distorts the way we look at God and others. It should bother us that we cannot see clearly, even to the point that we put the wipers on the highest setting...wiping the slate clear. This is confession...saying the same thing God says about your sin. God hates sin. Sin clouds our spiritual vision and distorts the way we love and interact with others. Sin should bother us to the point that we act, by confession.

Prayer: Lord, I want to start the day off with a clean slate. My sin of selfishness, greed, lust, and pride have clouded the way I see you and see the world. I come before you today, in confession, please clean my spiritual windshield so I can see people and the world, through the eyes of Jesus.

See you this Sunday as we celebrate the Lord’s Supper and talk about how true Disciples of Jesus FORGIVE. Let’s keep our spiritual windshield clear as we move toward the Lord’s table this Sunday,

Pastor Todd
